Education tourism is a type of tourism that sees the participation and experience of the tourist in learning, intellectual growth, self and skills development as the primary motivation. Education Tourism covers a wide range of products and services related to academic studies, skills development holidays, school trips, sports education, career development courses and language courses (UNWTO).

İstanbul is an important education center with its deep-rooted and worldwide known universities and new academic institutions catching up the modern age. State and foundation universities, many of which provide English language education, host many foreign students from abroad every year. In general, students who are exchange students in universities in İstanbul  or who have completed their higher education directly in these universities contribute to the city economy and play an important role in promoting İstanbul in the world.
